![]() ![]() The core parts of Farming Simulator 15 are there, with cash flow and expenses being realistic to a degree and all the farming equipment in the store that would be needed throughout a career. It’s great for people who do find enjoyment in this line of work but it just isn’t my thing. Although if any of my friends ask me to harvest their wheat, I’ll be going straight for the unfriend action. Last but not least is the multiplayer (exclusive to new-gen consoles), the ability to share the joys of farming with a friend or five… you read that correctly, six of you can have the time of your life in the same world. To give you an idea of how bad they are, when it snows it reminds me of the snowy effects on a worn VHS tape. ![]() Whether you choose the Bjornholm (Scandinavian) area or the one in Westbridge Hills (USA), I couldn’t find much joy in exploring either due to poor graphics all round. The areas in which you can farm are huge but ultimately so very bland in looks. I can only liken the collection of logs to that of the claw machines in arcades, lining up the tool then lowering and fiddling with various controls only for the log to fall out is a real pain. A lot was said about the forestry side of proceedings, it should’ve added freshness to be able to chop down and plant trees but even when you can afford the equipment needed it’s a real task that just infuriates. It’s just a shame that the rest of the game falters when it comes to quality and actual fun, just like the 2013 edition did. I’ll give it some credit in regards to the options in the store for when you are rolling in cash there are front loaders, sprayers, mowers, balers and even a beehouse. I lost $400 on hiring a person to do literally one length of a field. Unfortunately this isn’t the easy way out of monotony because they charge $1 per second and go even slower than I thought was possible, it’s like something you’d see on Rogue Traders where they milk a job for all they can. That is of course if you don’t outsource a job to a worker, which is done at the press of a button at anytime once you’re in the place that the job needs doing. That’s what you’ll be doing for the majority of your career in one way or another no matter the equipment you use. Just imagine hopping onto a tractor, lowering a cultivator and then riding up and down a field at a pretty slow speed. If you haven’t seen any actual footage of the game then I’d highly recommend finding some next time you’re having difficulty getting to sleep. Why? Quite simply due to the fact it’s as boring as being an adrenaline junkie in a library, wearing a straight jacket. So, in short, to get a taste of the many vehicles and tools on offer, Farming Simulator 15 relies on a real strength of will to stick it out until that point. Even buying animals comes with a cost anything other than chickens will force your hand into buying new equipment that is just unaffordable. When you consider how long it took me to accumulate a mere $15,000 bank balance after a mountain of hard work, roughly ten hours, and then price up the transportation vehicle for tree logs at $17,000, it’s a real slog to add another farming string to your bow. The main reason for this is not having the money to upgrade or add to your farming arsenal. Better get used to your starter kit of machinery because it’ll be a long time before you see any new tools of the trade. And there’s a massive $100,000 loan hovering over your head, which to be honest isn’t uncommon in this world to get a business going. Starting a career gives the player access to enough equipment in order to sow your seeds, collect whatever has grown and then cultivate the land to rinse and repeat the process. It offers you a decent selection of how to grow your business but in reality you won’t be able to afford to do anything other than the basics for quite a while. Whether that’s by focussing on harvesting crops, dabbling in the world of forestry or having a go at animal husbandry (which isn’t nearly as odd as it sounds), it’s entirely up to you really… sort of. The idea is to have a successful career in farming by earning money from various activities, buying better equipment, acquiring more land and earning even more money. ![]() Before I get into the nitty gritty of how exactly Farming Simulator 15 has disappointed a hopeful gamer, let me tell you more about the game. ![]() ![]() ![]() To help in finding the exact locations of the barn finds you can use the drone. ![]() Those who can’t or don’t want to wait for that can shell out credits to motivate the mechanics. Here’s what you see when you start the Windows GUI: It’s also convenient: I downloaded and ran the latest official Windows installer and had things up and running within moments. ![]() Out of the available options-including MATLAB-I ended up going with GNU Octave, which is free and open-source. However, I’ve since learned about some numerical computing environments and programming languages that can flexibly input and output both image and audio files while carrying out elaborate computations on them in between, and I decided to see if I could harness one of these as a substitute for ImageToSound. There are programs aplenty out there for converting pictures into audio, but virtually all of them treat source images spectrographically, as graphs of time against frequency- Photosounder is a prime example-rather than oscillographically, as graphs of time against amplitude. Nothing else of which I’m aware along the same lines is readily available for public use (PRISM, the software attached to IRENE, is not). AEO-Light is designed to convert digital images of optical film sound tracks into audio on roughly the same principle as ImageToSound, but it’s set up to assume there will be accompanying motion picture frames as a point of reference. Unfortunately, there haven’t been any convenient alternatives. Meanwhile, the ImageToSound software has some unfortunate quirks and limitations and is becoming increasingly challenging to run-I can still execute it successfully on my current Windows 10 laptop in Windows 98 compatibility mode, but others have told me they can’t get it to work. It can require a lot of time-consuming manual editing to clean up the area to either side of the trace and connect any breaks in it so that the paintbucket tool won’t “spill through” to the other side. More recently, it occurred to me that we could convert that result into a band of varying brightness in turn by reducing it to one pixel in height and then (optionally) re-expanding it-not particularly useful, I guess, but ImageToSound can handle it in that form just as well. ![]() But eight years ago, I realized that I could convert a wavy line into a bright band of varying width by filling the area above or below it with white using an ordinary Photoshop paintbucket tool, and that ImageToSound could then be used to convert it into audio. ![]() At first glance, this might not seem applicable to playing sources such as phonautograms. ImageToSound converts the sums of pixel luminance in each successive column in a source image file into successive audio samples in a target WAV file. In optical film sound tracks, the modulation of the audio signal is tied to how much light passes through a translucent strip that varies either in opacity (“variable density,” below left) or width (“variable area,” below right, with thanks to Iainf for the illustrations). In the past, I’ve relied on Andrew Jaremko’s ImageToSound, a piece of freeware designed to convert any 24-bit BMP into an 8-bit WAV file as though it were an image of an optical film sound track. Wouldn’t writing some software to do this be far easier and produce greater fidelity? It seems you used an extraordinary lengthy and convoluted process to generate barely audible sound. That method works, but a point raised by one reader is well taken: I’ve previously described a circuitous method of doing that here and here, as well as in my book Pictures of Sound. The question is how to convert that image into a playable audio file so we can listen to it. Or maybe it’s just a random squiggly line you want to treat as an audio waveform to find out what happens. Or maybe it’s an ink print on paper made from a gramophone disc a few decades later (converted, in this case, from a spiral into parallel lines by a polar-to-rectangular-coordinates transform). Maybe it’s a phonautogram from the 1850s or 1860s: a record of sound traced in soot on a moving paper sheet for visual analysis at a time when playback wasn’t yet on the table. Let’s say you have a digitized image of an audio waveform-a graph of the amplitude of sound vibrations as a function of time. It doesn’t have the friendliest of interfaces, but it’s relatively easy to get up and running, and it’s free (as in free beer, not free puppy), so the price is right. After years of trying to get existing software to do things it was never intended to do, I’ve finally written some code of my own for converting pictures of sound waves into playable audio. ![]() ![]() ![]() You might argue that these scenes are actually criticisms of torture, since at least in two of three cases a punishing interrogation is used by the "bad guys," but the gratuity of the scenes, combined with Barbie's ("good girl") use of it against Ken, makes that interpretation unconvincing. But paging through the reviews of this movie available on the Internet, I feel I am about the only one who had this reaction, even though I cannot forget that cringe when the drill is driven into Buzz's back in the interrogation room. I will leave out many more matters, such as whether we stayed for the rest of the movie, what we talked about on the way home, and what I might be learning about mainstream children's movies, parenting, and myself. (It is clear he is really saying, "they beat it out of me.") The third occasion takes place near the end, when a telephone toy (an old school 1970s Fisher Price phone), who is a kind of wisdom figure in helping the main characters escape their plight, shows up pitifully accompanied by guards from the enemy with evident bruises and scratches on his face and body, apologizing to the main characters for disclosing their whereabouts, saying something like the truth had been gotten out of him. Only after she starts rending a highly prized shirt, and Ken, still bound and wearing only shorts, has fallen forward on his face, does he agree to tell her what she wants to hear. She proceeds to start pulling items off his clothing rack and ripping them in half while he yells for her to stop. This time it is Ken who has information that Barbie needs, and she has stripped him and tied him up with ropes. The second occasion has Barbie (you read that right) with Ken in a spacious walk-in closet. The power-screwdriver pulls out the screws on Buzz's back panel, and the panel is removed and a big deal made of switching off one of his settings near his batteries, fundamentally altering his personality for much of the rest of the film, making him docile for the "bad guys." Then Ken moves forward with an aggressive look and summons a nearby robot to take a power-screwdriver to Buzz's back while others hold Buzz down as he resists and writhes. Ken wants Buzz to come over to the mean side of the tracks. The first occasion has Ken (Barbie's boyfriend) interrogating Buzz Lightyear, in the manner of old-fashioned one-on-one movie interrogations under an exposed light bulb. I'm flying without notes here, but these are my best recollections: ![]() (This movie, by the way, is rated G.) And then there is Barbie.īut back to "deeply disturbed": does a film created after September 11 and in the midst of the present wars get to pretend innocence when torture is playfully suggested in three different scenes? My descriptions might make you laugh given the characters involved, but no one who has read any of the torture accounts from the post-9/11 era (or indeed, long before) can deny the unsettling echoes between those accounts and the film's unstudied and untroubled attitude to the depiction of physical abuse (each time for the sake of "the truth") in this film. Let me preface these remarks by saying that I found the intimations of serious violence throughout the movie, and especially in the last half-hour (living toys nearly getting thrashed to shreds and burned to death in an incinerator, and calmly holding hands as they prepare to die violently in fire), almost willfully gratuitous. (Spoiler alert: if you don't want to know a few details of "Toy Story 3," stop reading here.) ![]() But I also left deeply disturbed by the presence of (what I at least took to be) a casual torture leitmotif in the movie. The movie served up enough double-entendres and other multilevel gestures, speaking to children and adults distinctly but simultaneously, to keep the older set (20%) in our packed Yonkers theater laughing almost in sync with the kids (80%). ![]() Today, I went with my nearly-five-year-old daughter to see the new Disney movie "Toy Story 3."
